An Old Irving Park Remodel for All Seasons
From the two patios overlooking stunning gardens and landscapes to the light-drenched breakfast room and sunrooms, 2202 Lafayette Ave. is a place to enjoy gracious living year-round. Thanks to an extensive remodel completed in 2000, Jim and Sharon Nussbaum transformed the 1948 brick home into the dwelling of their dreams.
The Nussbaums were careful to preserve the character and handsome architectural details of the period, while doubling the floor space to 5,200 square feet with the addition of a sunroom, an upstairs bonus room, a thoroughly modern kitchen, a master suite on the main level and an abundance of storage space.
“We wanted it to remain true to the period, but also make it family-friendly,” says Sharon, owner of Aubrey Home furniture store and an avid antique collector.
Her eye for design is evident by the seamless flow she achieved, without knocking down walls or otherwise disrupting the classic features. The result is the feel of an open floor plan, combined with the grace of traditional Southern elegance. Sharon’s ability to create harmonious decor is evident throughout, from custom oversized moldings to the floor and wall treatments.
“It’s been a great house for entertaining,” says Jim, fondly recollecting the many Thanksgivings when more than 30 family members would gather.
Indeed, the home has been designed for easy circulation throughout. The balcony stretching across the second story overlooks a circular drive in front, while a patio extending across the back provides a shady retreat and a view of a garden that blooms year-round. Hardwood floors, custom oversize moldings, three fireplaces, bay windows and high ceilings add to the classic elegance of this home in the heart of Old Irving Park.
