Two Entrepreneurs Keep the Community Running on Caffeine and Pure Art
Open since 2014, Vida Pour Tea is more than just a teahouse. And owner Sarah Chapman is more than just a tea sommelier. This UNCG alum is known for her sense of what people need to fulfill their cups. She uses a question-and-answer process to help customers find the right teas for whatever ails them. Starting dialogues with customers helps Sarah establish relationships with them in order to offer uniquely personal experiences each time they visit.
While it’s no secret about the tea, tisanes and herbal remedies that Sarah blends for her customers, her teas can be found all over the city. The shop is full of glass jars of intoxicating, aromatic loose teas: roasted chestnut, black peach, lavender rose, nutty chai and blueberry hibiscus green rooibos, just to name a few.
The People’s Perk Coffee Shop is a popular shop in the College Hill neighborhood of Greensboro. For five years running, Karen Archia has been owner-operator of the shop affectionately known as “The Perk” amongst regulars. All of the coffee is full-flavored, robust, custom-blended and roasted in North Carolina. Alongside a wide selection of specialty drinks and lattes, beans aren’t the only thing Karen serves up.
Her painting studio is also inside the shop so she can paint in between customers. Personal artwork plus other art and handmade goods are for sale from local artists and artisans. But this is merely one of the distinctive features of the shop. The People’s Perk also holds a widely acclaimed mural— a portrayal of women of all races, sexualities and identities—created by the Greensboro Mural Project.
An aspect of The People’s Perk that sets it apart from other coffee shops is that Karen and her customers enjoy the unique “self-portrait” wall to which guests far and wide have contributed.
